Dear Parents of Potential New Members,
Joining a sorority is a big decision in a woman's collegiate career and we know you have questions, so we are here to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about sorority life in Sigma Kappa here at Cal Poly Pomona!
Why join Sigma Kappa?
Sigma Kappa Zeta Upsilon is a diverse sisterhood comprised of motivated, supportive, empowered, and loyal women. We work together to embody Sigma Kappa's four values: Loyalty, Personal Growth, Friendship, and Service.
We encourage sisters to enhance their experience as a collegiate member of Sigma Kappa by participating in social and leadership opportunities. We want all members to grow and become the best person they can be!
Sigma Kappa's bond is strengthened by the loyal members in our sisterhood. We aim for our sisters to develop bonds with one another that will hold true throughout the easy and difficult times.
Our sorority strives to give back to the community and support various amazing causes. Sigma Kappa participates in five national philanthropies, which form the acronym SIGMA (Sigma Kappa Foundation, Inherit the Earth, Gerontology, Maine Seacoast Mission, and Alzheimer's Research).
Our bond as sisters is not simply for four years, it's for life! Sigma Kappa members form everlasting friendships here at Cal Poly Pomona. Our chapter truly is a home away from home, and our sisters make up an incredibly supportive and genuine family.
Will joining Sigma Kappa take away from my daughter's college education at Cal Poly Pomona?
Our chapter makes education a first priority for every one of our sisters. We provide our members with a supportive environment to focus on academics. Zeta Upsilon strives to ensure that our sisters stay on track and meet their goals by holding each member accountable for their grades. We also provide study rooms in our campus library for sisters to focus on school.
What are some opportunities during college that Sigma Kappa can provide for my daughter?
There are a variety of opportunities that Cal Poly Pomona's Sigma Kappa can provide for your daughter. We have various leadership opportunities within our sorority, such as holding a position on our executive board and cabinet. A leadership position is a valuable opportunity for your daughter to enhance her personal and professional skills during her collegiate career.
Along with leadership opportunities, there are also many ways for sisters to contribute to philanthropic services and social events. Sigma Kappa Zeta Upsilon gives back to the community as much as possible through our five national philanthropies. Our annual Ultra Violet Week incorporates the help of other sororities and fraternities on campus to raise funds for the Alzheimer's Association. We also participate in beach clean-ups to dispose of and reduce waste at our local beaches, and we volunteer at retirement homes. Regarding social events, Sigma Kappa works toward enhancing relationships within the chapter and the entire Greek community on campus. Social events in the past have included sisterhood events with other sororities and socials with fraternities on campus (games night, pumpkin carving, potlucks, movie nights, etc.)!
What is Formal Fall Recruitment?
Formal Fall Recruitment is a process where a potential new member will meet and get to know various Panhellenic sororities. As the weekend continues, you will get to know more about each sorority and form deeper connections with the members, while also learning about each sororities values and philanthropies. Formal Recruitment is a mutual selection process, meaning the Panhellenic community will help potential new members find the best fit for them!
Sigma Kappa is truly a sorority where your daughter can experience lasting bonds and endless opportunities during her years at Cal Poly Pomona. We can't wait to meet your daughter and show her everything Sigma Kappa Zeta Upsilon has to offer!
